Services Utility: FTP Publishing Service Display Name (?): | FTP Publishing | Short Name (?): | MSFtpSvc | Executable (?): | inetinfo.exe | Library (?): | None. | Depends On (?): | None. | Supports (?): | None. | Description (?): | Enables this server to be a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server. If this service is stopped, the server cannot function as an FTP server. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start. | OS (?): | 2000 Professional, XP Home/Professional, Vista Home/Business, NT4 Server, 2000 Server, Server 2003, Vista Server | Startup (?): | Default | Home | Workstation | Server | Minimal | Tweaked | Automatic | Automatic | Disabled | Disabled | Automatic | Disabled | Disabled | Disabled | | Explanation (?): | The FTP publishing service simply provides the file transfer protocol (FTP) snap-in ability to Microsoft's IIS. In order to manage your server's FTP settings or connect to your server through FTP this service must be enabled. If you plan on using this service be sure that you stay up-to-date with the most current security patches for IIS from Microsoft otherwise you could have a security hole. Microsoft claims that IIS 6.0 for Windows Server 2003 will put a stop to the all too frequent security holes discovered with prior versions. Bu, only time will tell there. If you do not wish to use this feature then this service can be safely disabled, however I recommend uninstalling it from the add/remove components if that is the case. |

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." -- The Bene Gesserit Litany of Fear from the novel Dune by Frank Herbert
